Substance Abuse in California
California is the most populous state in the country with over 35 million people, or nearly 12% of the total population of the country. With so many people and numerous large cities in the state, along with the state's proximity to the major drug trading routes across the Mexican border, it's not surprising that rates of drug abuse and addiction are high. According to SAMSHA's 2005-6 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in California over 9% of the population reported using illegal substances in the past month alone. Many people are addicted to these substances, but a large percentage of these people never seek help. The only way to truly recover from a dependency on drugs and alcohol is to enter a substance abuse rehabilitation or recovery center. The Mark Houston Recovery Center located in Texas uses a proven model to help men recover from addiction and achieve a successful life of sobriety. We can help people begin life anew, armed with new knowledge and life skills they gain in our program.
Crystal Meth a Problem in California
California's diverse culture, large population and sheer size of the state lead it to have a complicated drug situation. Drugs like cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine are smuggled into the state from Mexico, but meth and pot are also cultivated and produced in large quantities within the state. Over the past few years, crystal meth has become the most significant drug threat in the state. The Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs collects client data from all treatment providers in California, and based on this data, methamphetamine is now the most commonly reported primary drug problem in the state, surpassing alcohol and heroin. The data shows that the percentage of clients admitted with a primary methamphetamine problem increased from 26.2 percent to 34 percent of all clients. Meth is cheap and available in large urban areas as well as in the smaller rural communities. According to the Northern California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), counties south and east of the San Francisco area have become a major hub for the production and distribution of methamphetamine. Drug trafficking groups operating in California supply much of the crystal meth used in the United States. Their efforts have led crystal meth to become not just a drug abused on the West Coast, but throughout the rest of the country.
