Relapse Trigger #17: Stopping Medications Against Your Doctor's Advice
If you have been prescribed medications for depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, it can be tempting to assume that you can stop taking those medications once you feel happier, healthier, and more in control. Though you may wish that medications weren't necessary, it is essential to remember that the reason you are happier, healthier, and more in control is because you are taking the necessary medications. Quitting medications without consulting your doctor can put you on the fast track to relapse.
Relapse Prevention Action Plan:
- Talk to your doctor if you feel your medications are not working properly.
- Keep a journal of side effects so that you are better informed when you speak with your doctor.
- If you are still desperate to stop, talk with your doctor about trying a different type of medication or working on a doctor-approved alternative to medication.
